Requirements for the M.S. Degree

The graduate program in Textiles offers two options for fulfilling the requirements leading to the M.S. degree:

Plan I:      30 units of upper division and graduate coursework plus thesis.  At least 12 of the 30 units must be in graduate courses (see list iii))

Plan II:      36 units of upper division and graduate coursework plus exam.  At least 18 of the 36 units must be earned in graduate courses in the major field.

Students develop a program that satisfies their unique objectives within a chosen area of textiles in consultation with the graduate adviser and subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.

Coursework

(i)   Textiles Seminar (Textiles and Clothing 290) to be taken at least three quarters (1 unit/ quarter).

(ii)     A minimum of 3 units of Textiles and Clothing 299 are required

(iii)   Twelve units of graduate coursework to be taken from the following courses:

Textiles and Clothing 230 (3 units): Behavioral Science Concepts in Textiles and Clothing

Textiles and Clothing 250 A-F (3 units): Special Topics in Polymer and Fiber Science

Textiles and Clothing 293 (3 units): Recent Advances in Textiles (may be repeated for credit)

One graduate course (3 units) related to the area in which the thesis is conducted.

(iv)   An upper-division or graduate course in statistics is required. In addition, students must take a minimum of five units of upper division or graduate coursework in the areas listed below depending on their specialization in textiles.

     Human development

Instrumentation (GC, UV, IR, MS, isotope, etc.)

     Materials science and, engineering

     Psychology (social, developmental, quantitative)

Sociology (theory, stratification, social psychology, deviance)

Thesis

For students in Plan I, a thesis is required. The thesis will be done under the supervision of a committee consisting of the student's major professor and two other faculty members. In thesis work, the student must make an original contribution to the field of textiles.

Final Examination

A comprehensive final examination will be required of students in Plan II after the student is advanced to candidacy. This examination will be oral and/or written and conducted by a committee approved by the Executive Committee of the group.  Before this examination, students under Plan II must submit a project paper of substantial work in textiles to their major professor.

Standards of Scholarship

Graduate students must maintain a Grade Point Average  (GPA) of at least 3.0  (A = 4.0) in all upper-division and graduate courses during residence at the University of California.  Courses graded S/U, including research (299) and seminar (290) are not included in calculation of the GPA.  A course in which a student receives a D+ grade or lower does not count toward meeting the unit requirement for the master's degree but does count in computing the GPA.
